'Kaleidoscope' Dyeing: Japanese Itajime Shibori

  • The Zen Den, The Island Bristol BS1 2BE United Kingdom (map)

The Japanese tradition of shibori, otherwise known as 'tie and dye' in the West, has developed into a unique art form with many specialist areas.

This workshop focuses on a specific method called 'itajime' which means folded/clamped in Japanese. This Japanese resist dyeing technique involves folding your fabric into a grid of repeating geometric shapes, before clamping and dyeing the fabric to produce stunning kaleidoscopic patterns with a psychedelic edge. They're showstoppers for sure...

Exploring colours and playing with shapes, these mysterious bundles open out into spectacular patterns which look even more beautiful when you hold them up to the light. Brush up on this practice's rich history and culture, as you absorb your host's wealth of knowledge before you try making your own.

You can take your finished itajime shibori home with you after the experience - you will be using a high-quality organic cotton percale. They are great to wrap up presents in (a tradition known as 'furoshiki' in Japan), or you can hang them on your walls, upcycle your clothes, turn them into soft furnishings or a lampshade - they're guaranteed to brighten up any home.

This workshop requires a minimum of 2 bookings to go ahead. If this number is not reached Rhyannan will be in touch to reschedule.
